EndNote: Download/Install

Everything about using EndNote and EndNote Web.

Mac Sierra (10.12) Alert

For Mac users with new computers running Mac OS Sierra (10.12), the X7 installer you receive from the download link is prompting for a license key.

All new Sierra users must download X8 (now available from UTK OIT as of Nov. 9, 2016).

For users upgrading from El Capitan (10.11) to Sierra (10.12), EndNote X7 will continue to work, however you won't get the X8 upgrade automatically.  You must download X8 from the UTK OIT download site.

X8 for Windows is also now available and the install is succesful as of Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, 10am.  Note the Windows directions you are now required to download before downloading the installer file, say to install 7-zip to properly extract the licence.dat file.  This is not necessarily required.  If you right click on the zip file and see the option "Extract All" this should properly extract the installer and license file.  Where you run into problems is just double-clicking on the zip file, then the installer won't see the license.dat file.  Extract All or 7-zip solve this issue.

System Requirements & Download

Before you download and install EndNote, you should review the system requirements for your computer.

For Mac users, you must be using at least the Snow Leopard operating system (OS 10.6) and have an Intel processor.

Firefox may change download file type on Mac from dmg to dms.  Use Chrome or Safari to download.

For Windows users, review system requirements here. XP users must be on Service Pack 3.

UTK Download Site

UTHSC faculty, staff and students can download EndNote from the UTK Office of Information Technology. NetID is required to download the program. Once you log in, choose Thomson Reuters as the vendor to download EndNote program.

How do I avoid the product key during installation (Windows only)?

As UTHSC has a site license for EndNote, you should NOT be asked for the product key. To avoid this, you will need to do the following:

After downloading EndNote, be sure to right click and “Extract All” before installing. Review this handout.

If you do NOT see the "Extract All" option you may have another ZIP extractor program installed which has changed your file type associations.  You may be able to use that program unzip the ENX7Inst.msi and License.dat together.  The installer must see the License.dat file automatically.

If you still have problems with installation, come to the library and ask for Paul Gahn (448-7351) or Robert Mitchell (448-2219).  We can copy the unzipped files via USB to your computer and run the installer.
